5/31/2023 0 Comments The magic lantern bergmanIt can be viewed as a continuation of Bergman's 1982 film Fanny and Alexander. At the time, it was one of the most expensive Swedish films ever made. Ingmar Bergman wrote the screenplay based on scattered notes and conversations with his parents in their later years. Samuel Fröler and Pernilla August played Henrik and Anna, respectively. The film documents the courtship and the difficult early years of their marriage, until the point when Anna becomes pregnant with their second son, who corresponds to Ingmar himself. It is semi-autobiographical, telling the story of the complex relationship between Bergman's parents, Erik Bergman and Karin Åkerblom, who are renamed Henrik and Anna in the film but retain their true surnames. The Best Intentions ( Swedish: Den goda viljan) is a 1991 Swedish television drama film directed by Bille August and written by Ingmar Bergman.

5/31/2023 0 Comments The Rising by Brian KeeneSeveral more are in-development or under option. Several of Keene’s novels have been developed for film, including Ghoul, The Ties That Bind, and Fast Zombies Suck. In addition to his own original work, Keene has written for media properties such as Doctor Who, The X-Files, Hellboy, Masters of the Universe, and Superman. Keene’s novels have been translated into German, Spanish, Polish, Italian, French, Taiwanese, and many more. His 2003 novel, The Rising, is often credited (along with Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead comic and Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later film) with inspiring pop culture’s current interest in zombies. BRIAN KEENE is the author of over forty books, mostly in the horror, crime, and dark fantasy genres. 5/31/2023 0 Comments Shadow and bone by leigh bardugoIn the first book, Alina emphasizes her own plain looks constantly, so anyone beautiful becomes someone she cannot relate to. When Leigh Bardugo introduces Genya and Zoya in the first Shadow and Bone books, she places much emphasis on their beauty. In the show, they’re the tropes, not the deconstruction, and any nuance that their arcs would have takes a backseat to the more traditionally exciting characters. In the books, they both represent a deconstruction of what we typically expect from the YA stock character of the Beautiful Cool Girl. To include the ever-popular Six of Crows characters and to speedrun Alina’s quest to defeat the Darkling, two of the books’ most dynamic female characters, Genya Safin (Daisy Head) and Zoya Nazyalensky (Sujaya Dasgupta) became collateral damage, their storylines reduced to almost nothing. And yes, so long as the heart of the story is respected, changes can be good.īut when it comes to the second season of Shadow and Bone, it’s evident which characters the writers understand and which ones have been reconstructed to use as puzzle pieces in the larger framework. That’s been the creed that many fans of Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse books have carried into the Netflix adaptation Shadow and Bone, one that the showrunners also proudly proclaim. So long as an adaptation keeps the spirit of the characters and story, changes and timeline shifts are not the end of the world. 5/31/2023 0 Comments Dh lawrence in loveLawrence writes "Lady Chatterley's Lover" there, with impressive care for detail in footage shot at the same Italian printing press where the book was first printed. Amongst flashbacks detailing economically Lawrence's youth in Cornwall, Miles emphasizes the duo's sojourn in Italy at a villa in Florence provided by a new patron, Angelo Ravagli (Maurizio Merli). Also characteristic is couple's unsympathetic decision to send Dorothy away. In a typical scene, Lawrence becomes irrational at a party and out of control, slaps Fried around violently and breaks all the dishes, causing a speedy departure from Taos. Back in Britain his books have been banned by the censor, Herbert Muskett (an effectively stern cameo by John Gielgud). Picture opens in 1924 with Lawrence (Ian McKellen), wife Frieda (Janet Suzman) and their friend Dorothy Brett (Penelope Keith) en route to Taos, New Mexico, for a self-imposed exile at the house of art patroness Mabel Doge Luhan (Ava Gardner). Reunited with screenwriter Alan Plater who wrote his filmization of Lawrence's "The Virgin and the Gypsy", Miles takes a somewhat removed and cool look at his subject, with emphasis on accuracy of over emotional involvement making the pic a tough sell beyond its natural art house market. My review was written in August 1981 after a screening (of the original version) in Times Square:Ĭhristopher Miles's "Priest of Love" is an impressively mounted and acted biopic dealing with the latter years in the life of author D. 5/31/2023 0 Comments The Cows by Dawn O'PorterStella’s story in particular, while it achieved the point of showing how far people will go to make their dream come true, seemed so ridiculous that I almost lost interest. Some of the events that happened just seemed so unlikely that it was fairly obvious they were simply there to move to story along. On this rare occasion though, I think listening to the book enhanced its appeal. Although I listen to and enjoy audiobooks, I generally prefer printed books. Without giving away any spoilers, I thought the story was entertaining enough and as mentioned, extremely well narrated. Each in her own way, refuses to follow the herd and this has consequences for all of them. The story centres around three women – Tara, a tv executive who makes a silly mistake one night and it threatens to ruin her life Cam, a well known blogger who has a hugely successful career, but her mother and sisters despair of her life choices and Stella, a young woman mourning the death of her sister, who is driven to desperate lengths to get what she wants out of life. It’s a mixed bag of a book for me – definitely held my attention throughout, but when looked at in retrospect a lot of the things that happened were verging on ludicrous. I listened to the audiobook of The Cows, expertly narrated by the author herself, Dawn O’Porter, plus Karen Cass and Laura Kirman. |
